Adaptation to Effects of Climate Change Using Borehole Water Wells

Mererani ward is located in Simanjiro District, one of the six district councils of Manyara region where PIG Project is implemented. Here at Mererani, Proactive farmers invested in construction of borehole water wells in response to effects of climate change resulted to unpredictable and unreliable rainfall as explained in the clip below during interview with ITV in October 2023.

Due to inadequate Common beans seeds, Smallholder farmers in Manyara do plant Common beans grains instead of certified seeds. Through these borehole wells locally constructed, farmers at Mererani will produce common beans seeds (QDS) off season and sell to their counterparts during rainy season. This will minimize access to seed constraint, increase common beans productivity per acre and improve smallholders’ income.

Agricultural Markets Development trust (AMDT) sub granted Agro-Tanzania Organization (ATO) to implement Pulses for Inclusive Growth (PIG) Project in Manyara region, Tanzania.
